Metal detectors to be used at Leonard George Stadium football games
To further ensure the safety of student participants and fans, walk-through metal detectors will be used at all Spring ISD home varsity football games and at various other extracurricular activities throughout the school year.

Fans attending games involving the Spring Lions and the Westfield Mustangs at the Leonard George Stadium behind Spring High School are encouraged to arrive at least 15 minutes earlier than in the past to go through the metal detectors. Stadium gates will open at 6:15 p.m. for the varsity football games that begin at 7:30 p.m.

"Just as at airports, people who wear a lot of jewelry, carry a lot of change, a large ring of keys, a pager and/or a cell phone will have to deposit those items in a basket in order to pass through the metal detector," explained Spring ISD Police Chief Alan Bragg.

Three of the portable, battery-powered metal detectors will be in use at each of the two main gates to Leonard George Stadium. One metal detector will be used at each of the other two entries.

No Pass, No Play
According to the Texas Education Code, "a student enrolled in a school district, in the state of Texas, shall be suspended from participation in any extracurricular activity sponsored or sanctioned by the school district during the grade reporting period after a grade reporting period in which the student makes lower than the equivalent of 70 on a scale of 100 in any academic class".
Previous Participation
A student who has represented another school, ninth grade or above, in the current or previous year in any UIL activity, is eligible in the sport or sports in which he/she participated for one calendar year in a school to which he/she changes until:

  • his/her parents have a bona fide residence within the district;

  • the student has a release, signed by the designated administrator and coach of the school he/she previously attended, required only if previous school was in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico or Mexico;

  • the student's parents sign a statement in the presence of school officials or a notary that the parents reside in a bona fide residence within the district or zone and that the change of schools was not made for athletic purposes; or

  • the student's change is approved by the District Executive Committee of the district to which he/she is coming.
Residence Rule
Parents must totally understand that an athlete must live with a parent or a court appointed guardian for the first year when moving into Spring ISD. The court appointed guardianship must have been in effect for one year before moving into the District.

UIL Amateur Rule
Athletic teams may be given no more than one pre-season meal, per sport, per school year, provided it is approved by the school and given by a non-profit organization (usually the booster club) before the team plays in its first contest.

  • Athletic teams are limited to no more than one post-season meal or banquet, per sport, per school year and it must be given by a non-profit organization and approved by the school. Banquet favors or gifts are considered a violation if they are given to a student.

  • Valuable consideration athletes may not accept:

  • Cookies, candy and other gifts from other students or parents, often referred to as goodie bags;

  • meals, snacks or snack food during and after practices;

  • parties given by parents or other students that are strictly for an athletic team, and

  • anything that is not given or offered to the entire student body on the same basis that it is given to or offered to an athlete.
    Insurance
    Spring ISD provides partial coverage for athletes and cheerleaders participating in all UIL sanctioned sports and activities, grades 7-12. The policy is a cooperating (secondary) type policy with a $250 deductible clause. It is important for parents to know it is not a full coverage policy.

    Athletic Physicals
    Spring ISD requires all athletes have an annual physical exam on file with the coaches (MS) or with the athletic training office (HS) before trying out for or participating as part of an athletic team.

    UIL regulations require that this physical exam must be completed before a student participates in any practice, before, during or after school, (both in-season and out-of-season) or games/matches.
    Once a year and for the convenience of parents, the Athletic Department sets up physicals with area doctors at the cost of $10-$15. This is usually scheduled during the months of April or May.
