HOUSTON - Feb. 20, 2012 - Spring ISD students will start classes next school year on Aug. 27, 2012 and end school on May 31, 2013, according to the new 2012-13 school calendar that was approved by the Spring ISD Board of Trustees on Feb. 14.
The Spring ISD Advisory Committee on Education is responsible for preparing calendar options each year. The committee, which includes community members, presented calendar options A and B to Spring ISD staff members and parents/guardians in online surveys that were conducted during December and January. Dr. Dalane Bouillion, associate superintendent for curriculum and instructional services, presented the committee’s recommendation for Calendar A, which was based on survey input, to the board for approval.
“The significant difference between calendar options A and B was the last day of school. Calendar A ends the school year on May 31 which is earlier than Calendar B, which would have ended the school year on June 7,” Bouillion said.
More than 3,700 staff and parents participated in the survey. Calendar A overwhelmingly was supported by staff at 63.1 percent and by parents/guardians at 64.3 percent.
“The survey input made it easy to recommend that the Board consider adopting Calendar A for the 2012-13 school year,” Bouillion said.
In addition to ending the school year earlier, the 2012-13 calendar will allow students a full week off for Thanksgiving, Nov. 19-23, nine days off for winter break, Dec. 21 to Jan. 2, and one week off for spring break, March 11-15.
