HOUSTON - Jan. 30, 2013 - Five Westfield High School students have qualified for the Texas Forensic Association (TFA) state meet at Grand Prairie High School March 7-9. The students and the events in which they qualified are Marvin Blanco, Humorous Interpretation; Quanzel Caston, Congressional Debate; Marcus Jones, Congressional Debate; Alexandria Ross, Dramatic Interpretation; and John Wilson, Dramatic Interpretation.
Kaye Magill, Westfield speech and debate coach, said the TFA state meet brings together students from across the state to compete for the title of champion in their selected speech or debate event. This is a highly prestigious competition with many of the winners going on to compete at the National Forensic League (NFL) tournament in June.
Students qualify for TFA competition by accumulating 12 state points that are achieved by placing among the top eight finalists in their event. Magill said this is challenging because many events start with from 50 to 150 people competing.
“Each of these five students qualified by December in their chosen event,” Magill said.
