• Read More, Learn More

Read to a child. Have a child read to you. There is nothing more important to a child’s success in school and in life than being able to read. Spring ISD is committed to instilling in all students a lifelong love of reading.

Toward that goal, the district encourages participation in a variety of events focused on reading throughout the year. They include:

    • World Read Aloud Day
    • Dr. Seuss’s Birthday
    • Read Across America Day
    • Winter Wonderland
    • Stand up for Girls
    • National Poetry Month
    • Children’s Book Week
    • El día de los niños

The district also supports Books in Barbershops and Little Free Libraries to promote reading across the Spring community.

  • Books in Barbershops

Started as a way to help get books out into the local community, into places where students and their families can access and enjoy them, the Books in Barbershops program has grown into a [wonderful] partnership with local business owners who share the district’s commitment to inspire and encourage literacy. Each partner barbershop, located nearby a Spring ISD school, neighborhood or apartment complex, keeps a stocked bookshelf filled with interesting and entertaining titles chosen to appeal to children of all ages and their families. Located in these central community gathering places, the barbershop bookshelves are helping build a culture of reading and literacy, especially for our young men.

  • Little Free Libraries

With a network that spans more than 60,000 locations in 80 countries, the Little Free Library concept was introduced in 2016 at all Spring ISD elementary schools. Serving as a free neighborhood book exchange, each Little Free Library offers ready access to books for students and their families to enjoy, both during the school year and over breaks. The small, colorful boxes can be found planted outside campuses, allowing students to pick up or drop off a book whenever they want. By increasing access and providing a way to easily share books with others, these Little Free Libraries help strengthen local communities while also inspiring reading and learning all year round.
