How can we get the school zone flashing lights timed to match the dismissal time in the evening?

Will there be crossing guards posted in the morning and afternoon?

The district is working with Claughton to train school personnel and volunteers to assist at existing crosswalks, like the one at Walters and Spears roads. We cannot legally or safely assign crossing guards to an intersection or area that does not have a crosswalk with either a signal or stop signs in place.  Any interested volunteers should contact the front office.

We are also looking forward to the installation of a new traffic light at Spears and Monument Valley roads. Construction is expected to start by April 9 and be completed, weather-permitting, by mid-May. This new light will have pedestrian push-button access and ADA-accessible ramps. The project is the result of collaboration between MUD 150 and Harris County Precinct 4.

Why don’t we have more busses to reduce the number of students who walk?

At the start of the 2017-18 school year, using bond funds approved by voters, the district added buses and increased bus service districtwide to students who live a mile or more from the school. Currently, the state only funds bus service for students who live two miles or more away from the school, but the Board of Education has been committed to expanding transportation services for students to reduce the number of walkers and improve safety. Claughton currently has 16 regular buses and four Special Education buses that drop off and pick up students at the back of the school adjacent to Walters Road.

The district will continue to look at ways to improve safety for students who live within a mile of the school and encourage all families to follow the campus Traffic Flow plan to minimize the potential for dangerous situations. Parents can help by urging their students to cross only at traffic lights with crosswalks. In addition, we ask that parents only pick up and drop off students in the designated car lines.

Can we keep an officer on duty during the mornings and afternoon?

Claughton already has an officer on duty to assist. The district is always responsive to the potential needs of campuses and can make staffing decisions to adjust to changing circumstances.

Was Spring ISD police notified about the traffic problems before the accident?

Spring ISD Police has been working collaboratively for some time with other community and governmental agencies to address traffic safety issues along heavily trafficked Spears and Walters road. The new new traffic light that will be installed at Spears and Monument Valley roads is the result of that ongoing collaboration.

Would it be possible to install speed bumps on the roads around the school?

A traffic study done by Harris County Precinct 4 found that speed bumps would do more harm than good on Walters and Spears roads because of the need to accommodate ambulances on those roads.

On Walters Street, it’s impossible to walk because there is no sidewalk there. Can we have a sidewalk there?

According to Precinct 4, there is no way to install sidewalks where there are deep ditches right next to the street and there are portions of Walters Road that fall into that category.

How can parents help improve safety?

Follow the campus Traffic Flow Plan and encourage students to cross the street only at traffic lights.  Also, consider volunteering at Claughton to assist with student safety. If you’re interested, please let the front desk know. The Spring ISD Police Department will hold a special training if enough volunteers sign up.
