Greetings Salyers Families,
My name is Asia Whitehead, and it is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as the newly appointed principal of Salyers Elementary School. I am pleased to work alongside our phenomenal assistant principal, Rebecca Perez-Rangel, in service to our students and our community. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with such a dynamic group of students and honored to be your new leader.
I began my career as a first-grade teacher, in the Roosevelt School District, located in Phoenix, Arizona, where I also served as an instructional coach and assistant principal. Most recently, I served as an assistant principal in the Houston Independent School District. I earned a bachelor’s degree in human communication from Arizona State University, a post-baccalaureate certificate in elementary education from Rio Salado College, and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University.
I believe every child can learn and should be provided with a high-quality education and support in developing their talents, to prepare them to be productive citizens in the community. As your principal, I am committed to providing our staff with continuous support, guidance, and coaching to ensure our scholars receive high-quality instruction. This school year, we will focus on providing positive behavior supports and building positive relationships to attain high academic achievement, while using data to drive instruction. We love our scholars and we want to ensure they develop a love for learning, by providing them with a classroom environment that is welcoming and student-centered.
On a personal note, I am a newlywed and just recently celebrated my first year of marriage. I am a dog mom, I enjoy spending time with my family, and traveling abroad.
Although we are experiencing unprecedented times and we will begin the academic school year virtually, I am confident that our families, students, and staff will be ready to overcome any challenges that may occur. Remember, we are all in this together, and together we will get through it. I look forward to getting to know each one of you. I know 2020-2021 is going to be an amazing school year at Salyers Elementary.

The district will remain closed, providing instruction remotely, until further notice in alignment with the executive order issued earlier today by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
This decision puts the district in line with federal guidelines recommending that social distancing remain in place for a longer period of time than originally anticipated. To support our students at home during the COVID-19 closure period, we are moving forward with our plan to begin teacher-supported remote learning with assignments and grades.

Everyone take care and be safe!
