Spring Leadership Academy
Spring Leadership Academy serves students in grades 6 - 8 with a small-school program that seeks to develop young women and men into leaders who possess critical skills that empower them to succeed in a competitive and fast-changing global environment.
Service is at the heart of the school and all students are required to complete a minimum of one community service project per year, totaling at least two hours of volunteer work.
Students at SLA have the opportunity to take part in blended learning, which combines traditional instructional techniques with digital ones. In addition, the school offers classes in the Business Management & Administration career pathway, as well as opportunities to take part in the Leadership Officer Training Corps (LOTC).
Through a rigorous academic program that includes Pre-AP classes and high school credit classes, students will be well prepared for high school and beyond.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What exactly is LOTC?
LOTC is the Leadership Officer Training Corps. Much like JROTC in high school, LOTC uses the military as a template for the structure and organization of the program. The LOTC program is designed to encourage and empower our cadets to be better citizens in our society.
-
What will students learn in LOTC?
Many of the lessons come from military-style activities that serve as a basis for instilling leadership, professionalism, and discipline. The activities serve as a basis for instilling ethical responsibility, teamwork, and community service.
-
Is there a uniform requirement for LOTC; and, if so, what is it?
There is no uniform requirement for 1st year cadets. However, 2nd and 3rd year cadets are required to wear an all-black uniform (black shirt, black pants, black socks, and black shoes). A belt and buckle will be issued to each cadet; and, the maintenance and safekeeping of that belt is the cadet's responsibility.
-
Will students have to take LOTC and PE?
No. As a member of the Corps, Cadets earn a PE credit per semester in which they are enrolled. LOTC is designed to be a 3-yr program; and, it is our hope that once enrolled, cadets will remain in the LOTC program for the duration of their middle school years.
-
How long do students have to stay in LOTC...will they be able to choose another/different elective?
While the hope/expectation is for students to remain in the program throughout middle school, we understand that some cadets may not adapt well to the program (for various reasons). In this case, cadets and parents will be able to speak with the Counselor to discuss enrolling in an alternative elective.
