Roberson Middle School 2019-20 Application Information
-
Please be reminded that Dr. Edward Roberson Middle School will accept applications for the 2019-20 school year Jan. 8 - Feb. 7, 2019, and Elementary School Information Meetings for fifth-grade parents and guardians will be held Dec. 3-18, 2018 across the district. (See attached schedule.)
Starting this year, we will be using an online application process, which will be located on our website when the application period begins on Jan. 8. Upon your request, we will still accept a paper application through your child’s Spring ISD elementary campus, although we strongly encourage you to take advantage of this online feature, which will streamline and make our application process more efficient. To further assist you, on selected days during the application process, on-site parent labs will be available at Roberson for any families without computer or Internet access.
RMS APPLICATION PROCESS:
First Phase – Records Review
Each applicant’s previous year’s State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) scores, grades, discipline, and attendance records for both the 2017-18 school year and the first semester of the 2018-19 school year will be scored using a rubric. Applicants who earn a total of 50 points or more will be invited to the next phase of the process. All applicants will be notified of their first-phase status no later than Feb. 18, 2019.
All student records for students who are zoned and currently attend an SISD elementary school will be retrieved through our district database. District employee students that do not currently attend an SISD elementary school as well as students who currently live in an SISD school zone, but do not currently attend an SISD elementary school (i.e. Homeschool program, Private/Charter School, etc.) will need to first, complete the on-line application as directed, and secondly submit the following documents:
- A copy of the 4th grade 2017-2018 end of year report card with conduct grades and a copy of official attendance records if not visible on report card.
- A copy of the 5th grade 2018 fall semester report card with conduct grades and a copy official attendance records if not visible on report card
- A copy of the 2018 standardized test results (i.e. 4th Grade Reading and Math STAAR.)
- A copy of the Special Education Full Individual Evaluation (FIE), 504 Accommodation plan, ESL/Bi-lingual LPAC documentation/accommodations (if applicable.)
For students who fit the above criteria, the on-line application and all above documents should be submitted on or before the February 7, 2019 deadline by visiting our campus at 1500 Southridge, Houston, TX 77090 to Louise Shaw, our campus registrar.
Second Phase – In-Person Interview, Audition, and Teacher Recommendation Form
Applicants who receive an invitation to the second phase will participate in a live panel interview. In addition, students are required to choose and present one of the four following audition options: a digital presentation, a digital or standard visual-art portfolio, a vocal performance, an instrumental performance, or a concert/performance dance. All auditions will be scored using a rubric to measure applicants’ interests and abilities related to the courses offered at RMS. All interviews and auditions will be held tentatively on March 2, 2019, and invited students will be notified of their individual time. As and additional part of the second phase, applicants are required to have a teacher recommendation submitted on his/her behalf. All Spring ISD fifth-grade teachers will receive instructions on how to submit the online teacher recommendation form. All eligible out-of-district applicants must submit a paper copy of the teacher recommendation form in a sealed envelope at the time of the audition/interview. Only students who earn the minimum amount of points for the combined live interview, audition, and teacher recommendation form in phase two will then be invited to participate in the random lottery.
Final Phase – Lotteries
Spring ISD’s lottery process is administered by a private auditing firm and is a true, random lottery process. The general lottery is tentatively scheduled for April 4, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. and is open to the public. Eligible students and their parents will be invited to attend. All invitations to the general lottery will be issued by elementary counselors and Roberson staff no later than March 27, 2019.
Please be advised that 10 percent of the available seats will be for siblings of current Roberson students and another 10 percent will be for children of district-employees who meet entrance requirements. In order to determine who those students will be, two smaller lotteries will be held prior to the general lottery – one for siblings and one for employees’ children. Those not accepted during this process will have an opportunity to enter their name in the general random lottery with all other qualified students.
Please be reminded that siblings and/or district-employee lottery applicants will only be classified as such if they have submitted a complete application on or before Feb. 7, 2019 and have met the necessary points for both phases. All application statuses – admitted or waitlisted – will be announced immediately after the live lottery, and an official decision notification will be issued to all students who applied.
Again, thank you for your interest in Dr. Edward Roberson Middle School. Parents and students are invited to attend our RMS Showcase Student-Parent night scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, 1500 Southridge Rd.
