Penguin Dads

Male Emperor penguins are one of nature’s best animal dads.  During Antarctica’s long, cold winter the penguin dads each carry one egg on their feet, under a flap of skin.  They care for the egg (and the newborn chick) for about four months. Learn more about penguin dads at the link below.

Do you think you could carry an egg on your feet?  Let’s find out!

  1. Find an egg.  All you need is one egg, that is, if you’re lucky!  If you are feeling really brave, you can use a real egg (with parent permission and probably outside), or you could use a plastic egg or even a small ball.

  2. Keep your feet together, balance the egg on top of your feet and see if you can go about your business.

  3. Check out the videos on the right to see it in action.

  4. Make sure to take a picture of yourself and your egg to submit as an artifact.

  5. Take out a sheet of paper. Write your name, date, and grade on the first three lines.

  6. Title your paper Penguin Dads.

  7. Record your egg experience on your paper.
Don’t forget to place this completed activity/product into the pocket of your white Journey into Reading envelope.
