HOUSTON - Nov. 5, 2019 - Spring ISD and Planet Ford are inviting the Spring community to a grand opening celebration for the new Planet Ford Stadium at 6 p.m. Nov. 12.
The event will feature fireworks, former NFL players and performances by all three high school bands, cheer and dance teams as the ribbon is officially cut on the new facility, which hosted its first game on Oct. 31. The next game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 8 when Westfield plays Aldine’s Davis High School.
For the dozens of fans who turned out for the inaugural game, the new stadium drew a lot of praise. Spring High School Senior Victoria Garcia was grateful she was able to experience it before she goes on to graduate next spring.
“I’m really impressed with the work that’s been done,” Garcia said. “I think the coolest thing about this stadium is how much bigger it is, and how much space there is for more things to happen.”
There will be lots going on Nov. 12 for the grand-opening celebration. All three comprehensive high schools will have an opportunity to perform for the crowd, as well as cheer on their football teams ahead of the postseason.
Members of the Randall Reed family and Planet Ford employees also will be a central part of the event, which will include giveaways, a fireworks show, and the opportunity to check out some of the latest Ford vehicles, decked out in the colors of Spring ISD’s Westfield, Dekaney and Spring high schools.
The stadium was built thanks to community support of the district’s 2016 bond program to address long-standing facility, technology, and safety and security needs of Spring ISD. In addition to the stadium, the five-year bond program includes technology, safety and security improvements, two middle schools, building maintenance projects, a new police command center and three ninth-grade centers.
“The community should be very pleased,” said Spring ISD Board President Rhonda Newhouse. “It is a beautiful facility. Everything that we have in it is state of the art.”
The new stadium is the first for the district in more than 50 years and features a low-glare turf field with seating for 8,000 fans, a state-of-the-art video scoreboard system, great views from every seat, family-friendly concessions and modern press box amenities. The facility was designed by Stantec Architects and constructed by Durotech.
Two special features of the project include the Randall Reed Center, a community room for up to 300 guests with options for catered meetings and events, and a memorial to honor the sacrifice of area service members.
“We are really excited about the potential,” said Spring ISD Trustee Chris Bell. “The community came together, and voted overwhelmingly for it (the bond), they gave us a lot of input into what they wanted to see in the district. This was one of the things that they wanted.”’
