The words “bossa nova” mean new trend in Portuguese, which is the language spoken in Brazil. The music itself can be described as a sort of mix up of jazz and samba music. Probably the most popular, most recognizable Bossa Nova song is by Antonio Carlos Jobim and it’s called “The Girl From Ipanema”. You can hear the original song by watching the video on the right. The song is in both Portuguese and English.
Bossa Nova has a very unique sound that is often associated with the beach, summertime, love, nature and the easy life. Different kinds of music often make people feel different ways. Listen to the song again, or click on the link below to listen to other Bossa Nova songs. As you listen, make a list of adjectives that describe the music. Remember, adjectives are simply words that describe something, in this case, they are words that describe the music.
