Spring ISD Teachers Honored by the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators

HOUSTON - Jan. 26, 2017 - Fourteen Spring ISD teachers representing elementary and middle schools throughout the district were honored Jan. 18 by the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators (HAABSE) during the organization’s 30th Annual Outstanding Teacher Awards and Recognition Ceremony, held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. All were recognized as HAABSE Campus Teachers of the Year, while Beneke Elementary School teacher Jocelyn Chapman was additionally named Runner-Up for the 2017 HAABSE Elementary Teacher of the Year Award.

“As there is an ongoing need for recognition of dedication to the educational process, HAABSE remains committed to ensuring that teachers gain recognition for outstanding achievements,” said HAABSE President-Elect Dr. Tory Hill in announcing this year’s honorees.

More than 900 guests gathered to celebrate approximately 140 teachers from districts around the region who were recognized during the banquet and ceremony.

  • Tedra White - Booker Elementary School
  • Liz Wysatta - Clark Intermediate School

The Outstanding Teacher Awards and Recognition Ceremony were established by the group to provide a Houston-based setting in which to acknowledge educators and thank them for their contributions to their schools and local communities. In addition to recognizing outstanding teachers from across the region, the winners of the HAABSE Teacher of the Year competition were announced, and student scholarships were awarded to local high school seniors planning to pursue education degrees.

The Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators’ stated mission is “to enhance the education of all students and to exercise leadership in providing valuable professional services and strategies to institutions, agencies, and communities engaged in creating an environment in which students, particularly black students, can achieve academic excellence.”
