Trustees Honored During School Board Recognition Month
Spring Independent School District is joining school districts across Texas and around the nation in celebrating its Board of Trustees during January’s School Board Recognition Month.
This year’s theme is “Navigating to Success” and is especially timely as public education will certainly be a focus of the 87th Legislature when it opens on Jan. 12.
“Spring ISD has a talented, hardworking and dedicated board and we’re very fortunate to be able to count on their tireless service and expertise,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney E. Watson. “They are true servant leaders, spending countless volunteer hours to ensure our district stays focused on our mission to educate every student. They are also important advocates for the power of public education in transforming lives and communities and we appreciate their work with the Texas Association of School Boards on behalf of all students across the state.”
Spring ISD board trustees are elected for rotating three-year terms and are empowered by the Texas Legislature to govern and manage the district’s schools. The seven trustees represent the district as a whole --not a specific geographical area -- although they are elected to numbered positions. In addition, the board fulfills its responsibilities by establishing and setting objectives for the district's strategic plan, adopting an annual budget based on the plan, establishing policies for the operation of the district and selecting a superintendent who serves as the chief executive officer of the district.
Watson said he appreciates the board’s collaborative approach to tackling whatever challenges are faced by the district. “We call ourselves a Team of Eight and we continuously strive to create an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect to allow for a diversity of voices and ideas,” he said.
He noted that the board will have much on its plate in 2021, including working with the district on a new strategic vision as well as continuing to navigate the challenges of the pandemic.
