Parent Feedback Wanted on Proposed Instructional Materials Under District Review

HOUSTON - Oct. 24, 2018 - Parents are invited to help the district review proposed instructional materials being considered for English and Spanish Language Arts for elementary and middle school students, as well as Personal Financial Literacy materials for high school students.

“This is one of the biggest adoptions of instructional materials that we have,” said Susan Pelezo, director of core content and instructional technology. “We have many teachers involved in the review process but we also want parent feedback.”

Specifically, three meetings will be held to allow parents the opportunity to review the materials, offer their feedback and ask any questions they may have. Some of the publishers under consideration are Kaplan, Houghton Mifflin, Pearson and McGraw Hill. The district currently uses textbooks from Write Source and Journeys for elementary English Language Arts; Senderos for elementary Spanish Language Arts; and Pearson textbooks for secondary English Language Arts.

All meetings are scheduled to be held on Nov. 1 from 5 to 6 p.m.. The following proposed instructional materials will be available for review:

  • English and Spanish Language Arts for grades K through 5 at Bammel Elementary, 17309 Red Oak
  • English Language Arts for grades 6 through 8 at Twin Creeks Middle School, 27100 Cypresswood
  • Personal Financial Literacy for high school at the Gordon M. Anderson Leadership Center, 16717 Ella Blvd. in Conference Rooms A & B.

All of the proposed materials have already been pre-screened and approved by the Texas Education Agency to ensure they are aligned to state standards. In addition to gathering parent feedback, grade-level committees are also reviewing the materials to bring a recommendation to the Board of Trustees in January.

The goal is to begin using the new instructional materials in the classrooms during the 2019-20 school year.
